A seaside town with two kinds of housing
Seaford has two characters. Along the seafront and the roads behind it, Victorian and Edwardian villas and mansion blocks look out to sea, many converted into flats. Further inland, in Blatchington and Sutton, the housing is largely twentieth century: semis, bungalows and maisonettes, with a few newer developments on the edges.
The flats on the front deal with salt on the glass, shingle carried in on shoes and sand in the entrance hall. The inland houses are more typical family homes. Either way, a regular clean at £20 an hour keeps ahead of it.
Sea air, shingle and the long walk home
The beach at Seaford is shingle, not sand, and it travels. Small stones and grit come in on trainers, dog paws and bags, and scratch hard floors if they are left.
